Library Philosophy
The philosophy of the Venango Catholic High School Library is to provide instruction and services that will encourage students to become lifelong learners and information managers. The library strives to support the philosophy and curriculum of the school by fostering intellectual growth and providing physical access to diverse materials in conformance with current social and technological advancements.
Goals and Objectives
It is the primary goal of this library to serve as a fundamental part of this school, acting as an information center that both complements and supports the educational programs by providing a collection of books and non-book material that cover a wide range of subjects, interests, and viewpoints.
The library also has secondary yet equal objectives. These include encouraging students to become self-sufficient in seeking information in any library to which they have access and also to become critical and independent thinkers. The library strives to have students become lifelong learners. The library also assists faculty in providing enrichment materials for their classrooms.
Information And Services
The library hosts the school's second computer lab. These computers have an exclusive high-speed Internet connection. The library is completely automated; the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) is available on all school computers.
In addition to the library’s magazine holdings, students have access to hundreds of periodicals from schools and public libraries in the Intermediate Unit 6 area through interlibrary loan and also through the online databases in POWER Library.
The POWER Library online databases are available on the library and Computer Lab computers. The POWER Library allows a patron to access full text magazines and newspaper articles, photographs, pictures, charts and maps, as well as information about authors, poems, art, music, science, and more.
The ACCESS PENNSYLVANIA interlibrary loan database is part of the POWER Library. Students can search this statewide database for books and then ask their school or public librarian to borrow the material. These online databases are also available to anyone with a public library card and a computer with Internet access. Simply go to your public library’s homepage and click on the ACCESS POWER Library icon. You enter your library card barcode number and click the SUBMIT button. That’s all there is to it!
Library Contributions
Monetary donations are used to purchase new books, maintain and upgrade technology, and purchase periodical subscriptions. We will accept new or "gently used" books. If we decide not to add them to the collection, they will be saved for a future book sale. The money will then be used to purchase needed titles. There are several magazine titles that you could "adopt," that is, pay for the subscriptions. Contributions toward the purchase of new computers are always greatly appreciated.
We welcome donations to purchase library material as memorials to family, friends, or other honorees. These memorials can range from a specific item to material on a particular subject. Each item will receive a Venango Catholic High School Library book plate. An acknowledgement will be sent informing the person/family of your donation.
If you are interested or would like to learn about more ways that you can help, please call the school main office or directly e-mail Barb Reszkowski, the school librarian.
