Thailand Tales Book Cover

Jack McDonald, a 1963 graduate of Venango Catholic High School, recently published the book, "Thailand Tales" detailing his experiences living in Thailand. The following is an excerpt of an article written by Jack to share with the VCPS community. You can find the full article on the VC website later this week in the alumni announcements section. For additional information on the author, you can see his recent TV interview, or purchase his book through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

"I grew up in Oil City, PA, during the 50's and 60's. My only knowledge of a different culture was when I caddied at Wanango Country Club. After Air Force Basic Training, I was stationed at Greenville AFB, Mississippi. After three years there, I was assigned to Takhli Royal Air Force Base, Thailand, during the Vietnam conflict. Culture shock! I was enthralled to meet and interact with people of another culture, another religion, in a foreign land. I made many Thai friends, male and female, rich and poor.

After 38 years of normal life back in Mississippi - jobs, marriage, raising children, etc. - I found myself broke and out of work at 61. I had taken a one month vacation back to Thailand in May of 2005. When on vacation, some friends and relatives asked me to keep them up-to-date on my travels, which I did by e-mail. These vignettes were titled "Thailand Tales."

Upon my return, the lady named Katrina visited me one night and destroyed my rented cottage and all its belongings. She also severely damaged my place of employment. My beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast was shattered and in turmoil.

After Hurricane Katrina, I retired to Thailand in 2006 and continued to write "Tales" to a large audience of readers. After some time my cousin Marti McGrath (an English teacher), cousin Jack Long (also a VCHS graduate), and my dear friend and editor / writer Mike Hettinger all encouraged me to write a book.

This resulted in my book "Thailand Tales", newspaper articles, and a TV interview. "Thailand Tales" is an on-going sage of my travels and life in Thailand, and also has four poems, including "The mother who would not go away."

I resided in Chiang Mai, Thailand for five and one-half years. I traveled extensively in the country and also visited Laos, Myanmar (Burma), and the Philippines, and interacted with people from over 50 countries."

- Jack McDonald, VCHS 1963
